Gawler Barrier Trial Blackbookers March 8 - horses to follow from the South Australian trials

  • Lope De Capio most impressive
  • 5 horses to put in the black book

A total of nine barrier trial heats were conducted on a Good 4 track at Gawler on Thursday, March 8, where a few stood out as potential winners and can be followed in their upcoming assignments.

Here are my horses to follow from the Gawler barrier trials:

Trial 1 (1000m) 1:00.10
LOPE DE CAPIO won this heat in the quickest time of the nine 1000m trials and was never out of second gear as he cruised to the line. He goes well fresh and did claim two Listed races last campaign. Looks to have come back well after an 18-week break and can fire fresh.

Trial 2 (1000m) 1:00.92
MANUEL was happy to settle for 2nd place here as he cruised to the line while the winner, Lady Silhouette, was under hard riding. He didn’t measure up when tested at Listed and Group level last campaign but then strung two wins together when dropping back to BM64 and 70 grades – that may be his level but if he takes the next step, higher grade isn’t beyond him.

Trial 3 (1000m) 1:01.81
TENDERLY was a clear standout in this 2YO heats after showing good early speed and getting out to a big lead before being eased up late and going to the line with her ears pricked. The Stratum filly was only average in her first trial and looks to have come on significantly since then. If she can take the next step ahead of her debut, she can pick up a nice race.

Trial 4 (1000m) 1:01.85
Equally as impressive as Tenderly in the previous heat was Phillip Stokes’ unraced Choisir filly MUSIC BAY. She settled behind the speed and covered ground, but I really love the way she lengthened down the straight and rounded them up without being asked for an effort. Just looks like she might possess a nice turn of foot that will take her far.

Trial 7 (1000m) 1:01.23
Another one from the Stokes stable with BROADBAND going on to score a very soft win. She’s already a Group 3 winner and runner-up but has failed to produce that form in both spring campaigns. Was dominant last autumn and has come back in great order.
