Moreira has the edge at Happy Valley as scratchings reduce Purton's rides

Zac Purton & Joao Moreira

The Hong Kong jockey’s premiership has heated up with Joao Moreira given the opportunity to close in on Zac Purton’s lead.

After scratchings were declared for Wednesday’s meeting, premiership leader Zac Purton was left with six rides while Moreira has a full book of eight for the program.

That sees the pressure on now for the jockey’s premiership with Purton currently leading Moreira by three winners.

Purton was down to ride the Michael Freedman-trained Fortune Booth who was well in the market to take out the seventh on the program, however the More Than Ready gelding has been scratched.

That leaves Moreira’s mount, Solomon’s Bay as a $2.60 favourite for the event and could very well go on to win the race.

Moreira is booked to leave Hong Kong after the final meeting of the season is run on Sunday at Sha Tin to continue his riding career in Japan and has his eyes on leaving as a four-time winner of the Hong Kong jockey’s premiership.

Prior to tonight’s Happy Valley meeting, there are 19 races remaining in the season and both riders are hell bent on holding the trophy aloft.

Tonight’s battle is hard to call with all eight race favourites being ridden by one rider or the other.

The battle for the premiership looks headed for a Sunday showdown at Sha Tin with final acceptors being released on Friday.
