Leading Hong Kong rider - Zac Purton

Aussie rider Zac Purton took advantage of Joao Moreira’s absence and has taken over as leader of the jockey’s premiership in Hong Kong.

Moreira has been off the scene for a while looking into his impending move to Japan. Meanwhile, Zac Purton has been working hard to reel in Moreira’s lead in the premiership and achieved that goal at Sunday’s Sha Tin meeting.

The two champion riders are in a war of their own in the premiership as they have left the rest of field in their wake. Mauritian born rider Karis Teetan currently sits third in the premiership with 46 winners for the season, however he is 70 winners shy of second place now held by the Magic Man (Joao Moreira).

Purton rode his 117th winner on Sunday to leapfrog Moreira (116) and take the lead in the race for the coveted trophy.

Not unlike a tight political election, the race, with just seven weeks to go, is too close to call. Either way, if things pan out the way it is planned, Moreira will be off to Japan at season’s end.

Speaking of movements, AAP reports that Tommy Berry has also announced his intention to move back to Australia in August.

Berry, his wife Sharnee and their three children moved to Hong Kong for the 2017/18 season as a stable rider for John Moore but over time also took on the responsibility as a Jockey Club rider.

However, Berry announced last Friday that he intends to return home at the end of this season.

Berry said that family reasons were his main concern for returning home.

"Just want to thank every1 for all the messages. We are looking forward to getting home," Berry posted on Twitter.

"It has been a great experience and we have been very well looked after by the HKJC but we feel home is the best place for our family at this stage of our lives”.

Berry is expected to be back in Sydney and in the saddle early in the new season.
