  • Wide gates have been successful in recent times.
  • Last back-to-back winner was Musket Belle (1911-12)

Classy sprinter Vega Magic has drawn barrier 14 in Saturday’s Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) as he aims for back-to-back wins in the Morphettville showpiece.

The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained gelding claimed the 2017 Goodwood at his first run for the stable but will have to carry 2.5kg more this time around as he jumps from the tricky gate with Damien Oliver taking the ride.

However, wide gates don’t seem to have a major disadvantage in the $1 million event, with 11 of the past 30 winners jumping from barrier 10 or wider.

Stablemate Thronum was a late scratching in the Doomben 10,000 after bumping his head before the race, and he’s accepted to line up from barrier 5 with Tim Clark in the saddle.

Victoria’s leading trainer, Darren Weir, is strongly represented with Voodoo Lad (barrier 1), Stellar Collision (17) and Handsome Thief (12) aiming to give Weir his third win in the race.

2017 The Goodwood runner-up Missrock jumps from barrier 6, while other acceptors to have contested last year’s Goodwood include: Secret Agenda (4th), Santa Ana Lane (5th) and Lope De Capio (8th).
