Winx made it 25 wins in a row

History was made at Randwick on Saturday April 14 with the mighty Winx equalling Black Caviar's amazing record of 25 wins in a row.

The darling of the turf headlines our round up of all the action from Day Two of The Championships

Emotional scenes at Randwick as Winx does it again

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) was the headline act of Day Two of The Championships and it was all Winx in the $4 million feature.

Despite some pre-race nerves from connections and an easing quote of $1.24 for the 18-time Group 1 winner, the six-year-old cruised to what was another comfortable win in her amazing streak that begun almost three years ago after she lost on this day behind Gust Of Wind in the Australian Oaks (2400m).

Settling at the rear of the field, Winx's jockey Hugh Bowman waited to see what unfolded in front of him and it was Gailo Chop that took up the early running. With the imported galloper, Ambitious, making a move at the 600m mark, Winx begun to work into the race and gradually levelled up to them at the 300m mark.

With the big crowd at Randwick going into overdrive, the three-time Cox Plate (2040m) winner cruised home, joining Black Caviar on the magical number of 25 wins.

Chris Waller's mare is likely to be sent for a spell and will come back in the spring for another crack at the Cox Plate later in the year. Gailo Chop finished 2nd in the race, while Happy Clapper worked home well for 3rd. Last year's Cox Plate runner-up, Humidor, was 4th home.

Thebarman salutes in a thriller!

Things just kept getting better for Chris Waller after his popular galloper, Who Shot Thebarman, broke through for a memorable win at his fifth attempt in the Sydney Cup (3200m).

The nine-year-old, who finished 2nd in the race in 2014 and 2017, prevailed in a heart stopping finish from the Kiwi galloper, Zacada, while Sir Charles Road ran 3rd. The 2016 Melbourne Cup (3200m) winner and race-favourite, Almandin, could only manage 8th. The win by Who Shot Thebarman was the third in as many races for Waller, all of which came at Group 1 level.

Alizee salutes in the Coolmore Legacy

The Godolphin filly, Alizee, bounced back after suffering a couple of recent defeats by charging home to defeat a strong field in the Coolmore Legacy Stakes (1600m). Previously, the daughter of Sepoy had excuses in the Surround Stakes (1400m) and the Coolmore Classic (1500m) before finding the 2000m of the Vinery Stud Stakes beyond her.

However, she made it a one-act affair against the older horses by saluting from Prompt response, denying Gai Waterhouse an eighth win in the race.

An Unforgottable Oaks

It was an exciting edition of the Australian Oaks (2400m) with Unforgotten reeling in the tearaway leader, Hiyaam, in the dying stages to take out the first of the Group 1 races.

With Bowman taking out his fifth win in this race, including the last three, the daughter of Fastnet Rock won in race-record time and will likely be aimed at some of the spring majors in Melbourne.

The support races

A quality field of sprinters assembled in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) and it was the Joao Moreira-ridden Catchy that prevailed in impressive fashion in the $600,000 Group 2 ahead of Showtime. The race favourite, Viridine, never saw daylight and finished 8th.

Pure Elation was a strong winner of the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m), while the Darren Weir-traied Quilsta prevailed in the Sapphire Stakes (1200m).

Looking Ahead

Racing returns to Randwick on Saturday April 21 for the running of the All Aged Stakes (1400m), while the two-year-olds step up to the 1600m of the Champagne Stakes (1600m).
