Queensland Derby Tips and Preview - Waller’s Star to shine bright again

  • Wide gate might not be so bad with horses getting to the middle of the track.

Taking on the boys in the Queensland Derby (2200m) is never an easy feat for a three-year-old filly, but Chris Waller’s Youngstar look up to the task.

Having tipped her as a special in the Oaks, and backing her accordingly, the alarms bells started ringing when she came out three wide without cover early and looked to be struggling on the turn.

However, the daughter of High Chaparral dug deep in the straight and surged again to score a narrow victory over Another Dollar and Sheezdashing.

Her previous run in The Roses (2000m) was visually more impressive, and I’m sure this filly is better when ridden cold.

Kerrin McEvoy rode her like a good thing last start and was willing to cover ground in order to reduce the risk of getting caught behind the pack with nowhere to go.

But the slow early pace meant McEvoy had to make a midrace move and head forward around them which is probably what flattened her a little on the turn.

But there is much more early speed in the Derby with the likes of Han Xin trying to cross some other front-running types, and that should give Youngstar her chance to slot in from the wide gate and run on in the straight.

Despite drawing the outside gate in the field of 16, Kerrin McEvoy doesn’t see it as a disadvantage and told Waller on Wednesday morning that he could park her wherever he likes, and she’d be drawn into the right part of the track.

Waller said her work on Tuesday morning was very impressive.

Waller appeared far more upbeat about Youngstar’s chances compared to his other runners, and that must be taken notice of.

Daren Weir’s Heavenly Thought and Lucky For All look hardest to beat, but I’m sticking with Youngstar to stretch the winning streak to five in a row.
