Redkirk Warrior wins the Newmarket Handicap

Defending champion Redkirk Warrior and The Everest winner Redzel are among 56 nominations for the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10.

Peter and Paul Snowden's Redzel is the leading sprinter in Australia having won the inaugural The Everest at Randwick before following up in the Group 1 Darley Classic at Flemington during a six-race winning run.

Stablemates Russian Revolution and Pariah have also been given entries for the $1.25 million sprint on Super Saturday.

The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Redkirk Warrior caused an upset last year and will now be bidding to become the first horse since Razor Sharp in 1983 to win back-to-back Newmarket Handicaps.

Redkirk Warrior is joined in the entries by stablemates Catchy and Sheidel, both Group 1 winners last season.

Champion trainer Darren Weir has nominated Brave Smash and Hellbent among his five runners, while the Tony McEvoy-trained Hey Doc could get the chance to add to his Group 1 successes.

Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Merchant Navy has an entry for trainer Aaron Purcell, and is joined by Robert Hickmott's rising star Nature Strip and talented New Zealand mare Volpe Veloce, a recent winner of the Group 1 Railway Stakes.
