Gingernuts sibling - Griffin

While Gingernuts recovers from injury, little brother Griffin will attempt to win a second Guineas for the family mantelpiece.

The Matamata stables of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards maybe missing their multiple Group One winning gelding while he recuperates from his recent injury, but there’s light at the other end of the tunnel.

Griffin, the younger brother of Gingernuts has emerged as the family’s new ‘flag bearer’ as he prepares to take on the same race his older brother won this time last year.

Griffin will line-up in Saturday’s Group 2 Avondale Guineas along with his stablemate Mongolianconqueror who finished a very close second in the Waikato Guineas last week.

Griffin was seventh past the post in the same race but had no luck in running and was held up in the run home as well.

Jonathan Parkes rode Gingernuts to victory in the Avondale Guineas last year and will partner Griffin in the $100,000 event as the horse tries to emulate his brother’s success.

Michael McNab will take the reins on Mongolianconqueror as regular rider Opie Bosson will be across the Tasman fulfilling engagements aboard stablemate Embellish in the Group 2 Colin Hayes Stakes at Flemington.

Bookmakers reacted to the Waikato Guineas result, firming Mongolianconqueror into $8 while Griffin drifted to $41.

Both horses are yet to have riders named for their NZ Derby appearance while Embellish will remain in Melbourne with the Group 1 Australian Guineas in his sights.
