Early Golden Slipper Favourite - Performer

The Chris Waller trained Performer heads the early market for the 2018 Golden Slipper.

The Exceed And Excel colt has earned the tag as the $8 favourite for the $3.5 million event after a brilliant performance in the Breeder’s Plate over the 1000m sprint run at Randwick in September.

He was a clear last out of the barriers but mustered up some pace to be sitting behind the leaders on the turn. Jockey Hugh Bowman got him motivated from there and he finished too strongly for his rivals.

The team Snowden trained Bondi finished runner-up behind Performer and has been installed as the $11 second favourite for the Slipper.

The I Am Invincible colt Santos is listed as $26 in the market and was an eye catching third behind Performer and Bondi in the same race. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, his performance didn’t go un-noticed either as he was wide most of the way and was finishing as good as any other.

The Godolphin owned Hiemal started favourite in the Breeder’s Plate and after starting well, failed to run on over the concluding stages. Bookmakers have reacted accordingly and listed the Exceed And Excel colt at $51 for the Slipper.

Osorno, the stablemate of Hiemal was another eye catching run but he did show signs that he will be a better performer over more ground later on. He too is at $51 in early Slipper markets.

Sitting third in the early market on $15 is the Exceed And Excel filly Elessedil who won a two-year-old maiden at Canterbury in fine fashion. Taking over at the 200m mark, she put 3.5 lengths on her rivals. She achieved that on a heavy track, in driving rain and jumping from the outside gate (9). She could prove to be James Cummings’ strongest chance in the Slipper.

The only other runner under $20 in Golden Slipper markets is Setsuna who has won her last two after finishing a close second in the listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick.

The Waterhouse/Bott stable made the decision to send the Choisir filly to Melbourne where teaming up with Oaks winning rider Stephen Baster, won both her races on Victorian tracks including the Group 3 Emirates A380 Stakes at Flemington on Cup Day. Setsuna shares the third line of betting with Elessedil at $15.
