Eye Liner Stakes Tips and Preview - Local hope represents great value

Aaron Hamilton in Latest News 13 Jun 2018
  • Value lies with local hope.
  • Maps well and looks set to peak.

Saturday’s Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich looks a wide-open affair with handful of runners jostling for market favouritism.

I’ve found it hard to split five of the 13 contenders who bring vastly different form lines, but barriers and speed mapping may be difference in the end.

Lucky Hussler resumes from a spell and he has competed at the highest level for quite some time – hence his 61kg top weight.

His last win was back in October 2017 where he defeated Religify by three lengths in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley, but the inside gate and hefty impost may work against him if he drifts back which is the likely scenario.

Religify also goes into this event fresh and has a great first-up record as well as having won four and placed six from 11 goes around this distance.

But barrier 10 of 13 is awkward and he may be forced to work hard early or will get caught wide throughout.

Moss ‘N’ Dale is one of the most consistent gallopers going around and comes off a strong last start win over 1400m at Flemington.

He’s third-up and is previously unbeaten in two third-up runs which were both on Heavy tracks and in easier company, so with a likely Good track on Saturday and highly competitive field, I’m questioning whether he gains the same edge – although he holds a great record on Good going also.

Tyzone has been in great form around Brisbane this campaign and looms as a top chance for the locals, but I’m concerned he gets shuffled back in the ruck and may struggle to genuinely run out 1350m in this grade.

Which leads me to my top pick.

The Tony Gollan-trained I’m A Rippa has a real sense of timing about him and should get all the favours here.

He went from a Class 3 win and 2nd placing when first and second-up last campaign, to a 3rd placing in BM85 grade and then a win in the $1 million Magic Million QTIS race over 1300m.

He sat outside the leader and weakened to finish 3rd behind Tyzone when first-up this preparation, and he then claimed the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) over Privlaka and Mr Sneaky.

He then stepped up to 1400m in the Spear Chief Handicap at Sunshine Coast and looked home early in the straight but was claimed by Snippets Land in the final few strides.

His on-pace racing style will be much better suited at Ipswich, and with peak fitness on his side, he represents great value around the $9 mark.

Note: from the time markets opened to the time of publishing, I’m A Rippa has met with strong support and is already into $7.50.
