Star New Zealand pacer Smolda has won the $1.1 million Inter Dominion Final (2936m) in a titanic battle up the home straight against Hectorjayjay.

Trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen sent a lone runner to Perth for the Inter Dominion series. They kept their New Zealand Trotting Cup champion Lazarus back home along with Miracle Mile winner Have Faith In Me.

Eight-year-old warhorse Smolda was given the task of representing the All Stars Stable in the prestigious Inter Dominion series which was run under its traditional format of three rounds of qualifying heats followed by the rich final.

Smolda was runner-up on night one, finished in third place on night two before leading throughout in the final round of heats.

Heading into Friday night’s Inter Dominion Final at Gloucester Park, Smolda was sent around as a $12.80 chance. He settled 1 out 3 back for Purdon before commencing a three-wide move without cover at the 1000m mark.

Forging to the front with around 350m left and the coveted title of Inter Dominion champion on the line, Smolda and race favourite Hectorjayjay drew away to fight out an epic finish with Smolda prevailing by a half-neck over Hectorjayjay. Beaudiene Boaz held on for third place ahead of an unlucky Bling It On.

“A lap out here I wondered if I made the right move,” Purdon told Harness Racing Victoria.
“Down the back I knew (Smolda) was enjoying his work, I knew the horse to beat was outside me.
“(Hectorjayjay) was going better than me on the corner. I think when Josh (Aiken) went for him, he went for a little bit, but the time that they were going just took its toll.”

Smolda broke the track record by 1.2 seconds to record a 1:55.8 mile rate as the gross time was 3:31.3 for the 2936m journey.

The Group 1 Golden Nugget (2536m) was won by the Kim Prentice-trained and driven Soho Tribeca who led throughout to win in 1:56.6. He defeated Nathans Courage while Chicago Bull ran third.

Trainer Justin Prentice prepared the quinella in the Group 1 Mares Classic (2536m) as The Parade proved superior over stablemate Major Reality. Dodolicious set the pace and ran third.

Perth’s summer carnival will heat up with the Group 1 Fremantle Cup (2536m) held on January 6 followed by the Group 1 WA Pacing Cup (2936m) on January 13.
