Sportsbet.com.au Review

In this independent review of Sportsbet.com.au, we will tell you exactly what we like (and dislike) about the Paddy Power-owned Australian Operation, who claim to be ‘Australia’s Number 1 Betting Agency.’

If you enjoy betting on Australian horse racing, harness racing or greyhound racing, then there is no better online bookmaker than Sportsbet.

Not only do they cover every race meeting from Australia and New Zealand, they are one of the first bookmakers (quite often the first!) to offer fixed odds days in advance of some race meetings.

Another of their strongest traits is their generous offering of racing and sports promotions that often involve cash back if you run second or third in the big Group 1 events, miss out on one leg of your multi and a stack more.

Two big recent additions to the Sportsbet armoury are the Sportsbet Cash Card and the Cash Out facility.

The cash card allows customers to get their hands on winnings immediately by withdrawing them at ATMs, while the Cash Out facility gives the option to exit bets early before the completion of an event and guarantee a profit regardless or the eventual outcome.

Australia’s Leading Bookmaker

Although Sportsbet was acquired by the Irish bookmaker Paddy Power back in 2009, they are still managed locally with offices situated in Melbourne and Darwin.

Sportsbet offer a terrific range of betting options from all three racing codes – horse racing, harness racing and greyhound racing – to popular local sports such as the AFL and NRL, along with a wide-range of markets on overseas sporting events such as the NFL, NBA, tennis, soccer and even novelty markets such as betting on reality TV programs and politics.

Promotions

Sportsbet are the leading bookmaker when it comes to promotions and you can find dozens of offers relating to horse racing, harness racing, greyhound racing and sports.

When the big Group 1 thoroughbred races roll around you can expect plenty of offers from this bookmaker offering cash back if your runner finishes second or third, with the cash back offer generally up to $100 which suits both casual and serious punters alike.

Another very generous offer from Sportsbet is their ‘Saturday Power Prices’ where the bookmaker will offer increased odds about every horse in every race on designated metropolitan meetings for an entire hour!

Sometimes taking early fixed odds can be great, but if you do miss them or are happy to wait, quite often you can back that $2.25 favourite at boosted odds of $2.75 for the 60 minute period.

Harness racing and greyhound racing punters are also looked after with the bookmaker offering a number of money back options. Check out their website and click ‘Promotions’ at the top of the page to take advantage of their generous offers all-year round.

Sports lovers have even more promotions thrown at them with a number of cash back and boosted winnings added on to their favourite sports.

An example of one of their very generous promotions is the AFL special where Sportsbet refund any losing bets (up to $100) on head to head bets if the team you have bet on led at any of the first three breaks (quarter time, half time, three-quarter time) but went on to lose the match.

Odds and Markets

Sportsbet are quite often the first bookmaker to offer fixed odds on horse racing, harness racing and greyhound racing events.

For meetings held during the week for horse racing, the fixed odds market is generally available at least 12-24 hours in advance. So if you’re looking to get on one of your favourite runners on a Tuesday, it is highly likely that you could check the fixed odds after work on a Monday and see the price that is available at Sportsbet. Chances are that most of the other bookmakers won’t offer a fixed price until the morning of the event.

Things get even better on the weekend for lovers of all three racing codes with fixed odds markets available anywhere up to two or three days in advance. For Saturday metropolitan horse racing the markets are set on a Wednesday whilst for non-metropolitan meetings and the other two racing codes, they will still be available on selected meetings a couple of days out from the event itself.

If you want to bet on the Tote, then Sportsbet has you covered for horse racing as they offer Top Tote Plus (TT+). You will receive the better of the dividends declared by the three Australian TAB’s or the Starting Price (SP).

Harness racing and greyhound racing fans are offered Midi Tote where you will receive the 2nd highest dividend declared by the three TAB’s.

Sports are kept separate with a huge number of markets available on AFL, NRL, rugby, cricket, tennis, soccer and many more sports.

In terms of odds, the lines are pretty tight on their sports markets, which means they are offering a competitive price. An example of their AFL markets shows that Sportsbet are betting between 104%-105% for their head-to-head and line betting options.

Website

First impression of the Sportsbet website is that it is very neat on the homepage with only the next three races to jump being displayed. This is a good thing as you don’t have markets and figures in your face from the outset.

‘Quick Links’ in the left hand side of the menu is useful for quickly finding the biggest events taking place on horse racing and sports, otherwise the ‘Racing’ and ‘Sports’ tab are very easy to navigate in order to find your desired meeting or sport.

The biggest promotions are clearly displayed on the right hand side menu and the visuals are quite good for those that care to take notice.

If you are looking for the entire list of promotions, you can either click one of the right hand side offers and then find ‘All Bet Offers’ in the bar across the top or from the homepage you can find it right at the top of the page under ‘Promotions’.

Sportsbet also deserve credit for providing detailed information on their promotions, rather than hiding them away for the user to try and find like other bookmakers can do.

Considering the amount of offers available though, Sportsbet could have made the ‘Promotions’ link a little more obvious to find as the font is tiny and if you are looking elsewhere you could miss it.

A quick scroll down the homepage reveals the upcoming ‘Racing Coverage’ or meetings followed by a couple of sports markets. If one takes your fancy then simply click on the team, the bet slip will pop up and you can place your wager in the space of five seconds. Too easy!

Live Streaming

Sportsbet offer live streaming of all Victorian horse races having become the first bookmaker to do so in 2015. All you need to do to be able to watch live races from the likes of Flemington, Caulfield and Moonee Valley, is have funds deposited in your account.

In addition to the Victorian racing, Sportsbet also streamed a number of sports events including tennis, soccer, snooker and much, much more on a daily basis.

App

The Sportsbet app is one of the best on the market. Giving your access to thousands of markets on the go, the app is available from the App store for use on iPads and iPhones as well as in an Android format for other mobile devices and tablets. It is free to download too and you can deposit funds and withdraw winnings from your account through the app.

However, if you prefer not to download the apps, Sportsbet do have a dedicated mobile site which makes betting from your phone or tablet a simple process.

Customer Service

Sportsbet offer an impressive array of information to ensure they’re on hand to deal with any queries or issues. They have separate phone numbers for general queries or ones that are devoted to qualifying for a bonus bet. Live chat is also available, although they do lose marks for not providing 24/7 customer service, something that will have to change if they have aspirations to appeal more globally.
