Thursday's Chester tips - Race-by-race selections for day two of Chester's May Festival meeting

Racingbase Staff in UK Racing 11 May 2017
Thursday sees the second day of Chester's May Festival meeting take place.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the second day of the May Festival meeting, including the feature Group Three Chester Vase.

Thursday sees the second day of the Chester May Festival meeting go to post, and a seven-race card on the Roodeye gets underway from 1.50pm.

ITV Racing cameras will again be in attendance, and Ed Chamberlain and the team will have live coverage of the first four races of the afternoon, headlined by the Group Three Chester Vase Stakes which takes place as the fourth race of the afternoon.

On another cracking afternoon of Flat racing action at the top venue, Brian Healy goes through the day’s racecard where he has tips and selections in all seven contests over the Roodeye.

Khairaat is bidding for a hat-trick of wins, but several of Sir Michael Stoute’s runners in recent days have looked in need of their first run, and BROROCCO could be the answer to the day’s opening contest.

Andrew Balding’s charge is drawn widest of the field, which isn’t ideal; but he has proven himself a smart performer with several good runs last term in strong handicaps, including when winning back-to-back races at Newmarket and Yarmouth.

The Shirocco gelding arrives fit having already had two runs, and he built on his reappearance at Chelmsford in April to score readily at Epsom later in the same month from Banditry.
He’s been pushed up 4lbs for that success, but open to further improvement he can take advantage of his race-fitness and can overcome his wide berth to follow up with a guaranteed strong pace likely to give him a nice tow into the race.

The first of the day’s Group Three contests, and Aidan O’Brien’s DEAUVILLE could be hard to beat in this contest, having already had the benefit of a run when finishing runner-up at Sandown recently.

The high-class Galileo colt performed with huge credit last term despite bombing out in the Epsom Derby on the back of a promising runner-up effort at York on his return to action. Having arguably failed to handle the idiosyncrasies of Epsom, he went on to win the Belmont Derby prior to a hugely creditable third to Mondialiste in the Arlington Million.

The run was needed at Meydan in March when finishing seventh to Vivlos in the Group One Dubai Turf, and he built on that effort to go close behind Ulysees in the Gordon Richards Stakes last time where he was beaten just one length.

He may still have needed to knock off some rust at Sandown, but he should be spot on now and he had Royal Artillery behind him at the Esher track; sure to come on again for the run, he is likely to prove a tough nut to crack in this contest.

3:00 - Boodles Diamond Handicap Cl2 (3yo) 7f127y

MUTAWATHEB was a dual-winner last term, scoring at Newbury and Doncaster, and Richard Hannon’s charge can go one better than his reappearance runner-up effort on the all-weather at Chelmsford back in March where he was beaten just over two lengths behind the reopposing Mailshot.

The Dark Angel colt was arguably unlucky, where he was denied a clear run when trying to challenge and then hanging left as he began to tire; but likely to be sharper now, he meets Mark Johnston’s charge on slightly better terms and with the benefit of a run now against his then-race-fit rival so he could well turn the tables now.

He remains on a fair mark on the back of that effort, and granted a bit more luck in running where he can avoid traffic problems from this draw at a track which favours front-runners, he can get off the mark for the season.

3:35 - MBNA Chester Vase Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m4f63y

Aidan O’Brien fires four bullets at this Group Three price, and it could be worth siding with THE ANVIL despite the Galileo colt being overlooked by Ryan Moore.

Although winless as a juvenile, the Galileo colt performed admirably in four of his first five runs, making the frame in both the Royal Lodge Stakes and Autumn Stakes at Newmarket; and he may have been amiss when disappointing in the Racing Post Trophy.

Absent afterwards, he made a taking return to action in a Dundalk maiden at the end of March, readily brushing aside Mauricio to score by the better part of six lengths. Always travelling comfortably, it is hard to evaluate what he beat there; but he did the job impressively and shaped as if this longer trip won’t prove an issue.

The Galileo colt likes to race prominently, so he could well prove a hard one to peg back from his number one stall; and open to improvement although potentially vulnerable to a less exposed sort, he could spring a minor surprise.

4:05 - English Fine Cottons EBF Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) Cl3 (2yo) 5f15y

DAHIK shaped well on his debut at Doncaster twelve days ago, finding only a well-regarded sort in Koditime a half-length too strong.

Roger Varian’s charge should progress for that experience, where the pair had pulled over one length clear of the third, and the Society Rock colt looks a potentially smart recruit on the evidence of that run.

A half-brother to several decent types, he has a decent draw to race from in this contest; and open to improvement, he can go one better under Jim Crowley with the promise of further progress to come.

4:35 - T&L Leasing Handicap Cl3 (3yo) 6f17y

SAYESSE saw plenty of action as a juvenile, but Mick Channon’s charge achieved a respectable level of form which included notching up four wins throughout the season with successes at Brighton, Newmarket, Leicester and over this course in September where he beat Boundsy by a head.

Possibly over the top in subsequent outings, the Sayif gelding was disappointing on each of his last three outings; but he has returned from a break to run twice in April with good in-the-frame efforts at Kempton and Bath where he was just over one length third behind Goodwood Crusader and Mr Pocket who dead-heated in that race.

He may lack the scope of a few of these, but he should continue to give a good account of himself; and racing out of a good draw on the inner, he can go close in a competitive handicap sprint.

5:05 - Virgin Atlantic Handicap Cl3 (4yo+) 1m2f70y

BANISH looked a potentially useful sort when winning at the third attempt at Lingfield last May, but signs of temperament appeared to curtail the progress of the Smart Strike gelding thereafter; although everything clicked when he resumed winning ways at Kempton in September.

Never a factor in two subsequent starts at Newmarket and back at Kempton where old waywardness resurfaced, he shaped well on his seasonal return at Doncaster last month behind Fidaawy and entitled to build on that run then he could well get back on the scoresheet with Ryan Moore taking over in the saddle.

Dropped 1lb in the weights on the back of that effort, he has to keep his temperament in check; but he’s talented and possible he may have more to offer if his energies can be properly channelled. Sure to get some strong handling here, he could be the answer to a tricky finale.
