There were a total of eight barrier trials at Strathalbyn on Thursday, February 23, and a few stood out as horses to follow.
Here are my horses to follow from the Strathalbyn barrier trials:
Trial 1 (1000m) 01:02.68
Race caller Terry Mcauliffe perfectly summed up the opening heat of the Strathalbyn barrier trials when he said “we won’t see a better trial this morning.” It was the second quickest of the seven 1000m heats, but the winner, MODEL DRAGON, came from a distant last, rounded them up and won as she pleased. The lightly-raced daughter of Pendragon was a very impressive first-up winner at Cranbourne after trialling well in the lead up – this trial was miles better. She’s in for a big campaign and I can’t wait to see where trainer Phillip Stokes places her.
Trial 2 (1000m) 01:02.20
The classy BEAUTIFUL FLYER has returned in great order and won the quickest heat of the day by 4.5 lengths and was never asked for an effort. She began well, sat up on the speed and just proved far too good as she coasted to the line for a soft victory. She has won first-up a couple of times and was only narrowly beaten by Battle Brewing when first-up last campaign. She’s one to follow this campaign until she scores.
Trial 7 (1000m) 01:03.03
The time may have been a bit slower from MILE HIGH but he did it very, very easy and is still a maiden. The three-year-old son of Kaphero began well, took up the running midrace and cruised to the line while the rest where under pressure to get near him. He’ll win a race soon if not first-up.
