Rosehill Barrier Trials May 8 - some babies to bet on

  • Brisbane carnival-bound gallopers excel
IOWA: inside in front, ran slashing trial under a strangle hold

A set of barrier trials were conducted upon Rosehill Gardens racecourse on the morning of Monday, 8 May.

Everything was lovely.

The 16 trials were run under beautiful weather on a good track.

Here are the standouts from that morning.

Older Horses

YELLEN: this was impressive. She ran 5th in an open 1030m trial behind Firebird Flyer but she had led them a merry dance, on her ear, and was throttled down final stages. Could have won it easily. Hasn't raced for a year but is forward.

MOGADOR: has been gelded since last campaign and was on the bridle cruising all way when strong 2nd to a horse who is in form and racing well named Gretna. Could go to Brisbane and be competitive.

ODE TO EVENING: is an import from Europe whose best form has been over middle distances. Did show speed late in this 900m trial when well beaten by Japonisme, but he looks a racehorse worthy of following.

BADAJOZ: has come up an absolute treat this campaign. Is literally gliding across the ground. Has been gelded and this was a fast trial win under a hold.

JEANNEAU: loved this trial. Was only 3 lengths off Badajoz and she wasn't let go at any stage. She is eligible for a Class 1! Smart filly who will win this campaign.

MANICURE (Exceed and Excel - Trim) The hope is Darren Beadman produces this filly at the provincials on debut. She is unraced and from my perspective watching this effort to run 4th in a slow trial, she is very smart.

IOWA (All American - Lahana) It would be no surprise to me to see this filly end up in Brisbane for the carnival. Ran 2nd in a fast trial here and jock still hasn't let her run. Looks very, very smart.

VINTAGE LUXE (Bernadini - Smash Hit) may not be top drawer but if prudently placed, can win. Looks ideal material for say a 1200m 2YO mdn at the provincials. Can find the line.

MAD FOX (Foxwedge - Miss Soiree) Not sure what to make of this. He jumped first, carried his head very high, led easily, and just dropped them when they straightened to win 900m trial in fast time, under a grip. Just might be very handy.

ADSUM (Sebring - Chordata) looks awesome. Trialled under a Full Nelson and still pulled his way to 2nd in slowly run trial, but looks a ball of muscle. Is unraced and extremely good.
