The much watched set of Rosehill barrier trials on Valentine's day, left us in no doubt.
We can find some winners down the track.
Here are the best runs and likely Black Book winners to follow.
McCREERY: wasn't asked to do much in a trial that boasted a number of fit horses who have already raced this year. And they went quick. Still, he poked along behind them looking at ease.
KAWAIKINI: is a bush Class 1 galloper who ran a terrific trial against open grade horses. Got home strongly along the inside for 4th after being well back early. Looks very handy.
GAMBLER'S BLUES: has come back better than ever and strolled around in useful time without being asked to quicken. Ready for a BM 80.
MANDOLIZE: is a maiden and probably a provincial class maiden at that, but she sat 3-deep in this trial and still looked very at ease winning in useful time.
INTERLOCUTER: mark this strange name down. He's only a maiden, unraced 4YO maiden, and he ran 6th in this trial. But he can run alright.
STAR OF MONSOON: very leisurely run, coursing wide most of it and not asked to extend at all. Ran 4th but could have won easily. Time was very slow though.
ARTEMIS ROSE: this was impressive. Is only a 3YO filly maiden, but she will progress to Black Type by end of this campaign. Looks fast and strong.
BLACK MOSAIC: very fast and daisy-cuts along at a terrific speed. Is a maiden but will win up the line as easy as you please when presented.
THE AVENGER: this was aq good trial. He sat rearward and wide and came down outside under a full-nelson for 4th in a useful time. Is unraced but has loads of talent.
SONGLIKE (Your Song-Mabkara) Wow. When asked to go this filly just went bang. Is unraced but looks Black Type grade.
TORVIL (Not A Single Doubt-Bolero Queen) if they take this hulking giant to the provincials, just get on. Looks to have a long, fast stride and should be winning soon.
BALLET ROSE (Exceed and Excel-Nureyev's Girl): ran 4th in slow time and beaten a fair way. But cantered around the whole trip and was not asked to extend at all. Might be smart.
ZA ZI BAR (All Too Hard-Wiener) seems to have a lot of natural early pace. Scooted along to lead this 900m trial easily and eased down won...but in overall slow time. Pay to follow though.
PAPER TRADE (Written Tycoon-Rose Of Scotland) Time was only fair and they were coming at him late, but to his credit, without being pushed out, he led all way to win this trial. Is relaxed and looks an early comer.
SOLAR PATCH (Stratum-Fleeting Touch) time for this trial was slow but I liked the way he coursed wide then knuckled down to his task and ran down a good one to win it with only minimal urgings. Might be handy.
AUGUSTUS (Snitzel-Gussy Godiva) is a high-priced colt who sat behind pace then did get home quite strongly for 2nd in a trial where everything sprinted for home. That was the part I liked most.
