Morphettville Barrier Trial Blackbookers December 7 - horses to follow from the South Australian trials

  • 7 to follow
  • Shuck a clear standout

A total of nine barrier trial heats where run and won at Morphettville on Thursday, December 7.

A few stood out as potential winners and can be followed in their upcoming assignments.

Here are my horses to follow from the Morphettville barrier trials:

Trial 1 (800m) 47.46
It was the first public outing for the Phillip Stokes-trained Choisir filly, MUSIC BAY, and boy did she impress. She settled beautifully behind the speed, angled into the clear as they hit the straight and went on to win in a canter. Tony McEvoy’s ASSERTIVE APPROACH led early and was hard held going to the line to finish in 3rd. The unraced Akeed Mofeed colt also impressed and can be followed into his first-up assignment.

Trial 2 (1000m) 59.78
The first three home went equally as well, but it was the 5th placed SAGAAB that looked most stylish making ground from last place on the turn. His best form is over a mile and beyond so he may need the first-up run, but he looks to have come back in great order and can certainly be winning races off that performance.

Trial 4 (1000m) 59.86
IT’S BEEN A BATTLE won three from six in his first campaign and was tested in the Lightning Stakes (1050m) last campaign where he finished five lengths from Bandipur. He settled toward the rear and stoked up late to claim an impressive trial win over others that were pushed out to the line.

Trial 5 (1000m) 1:00.00
The unraced three-year-old Helmet filly, SKID LID, looked too far back to figure in the finish as they entered the straight, but the way she attacked the line under hands and heels riding suggests she’s got some talent.

Trial 7 (1000m) 1:00.97
MANILOW from the Tony McEvoy yard was caught three deep without cover throughout and was under less pressure than the others as he cruised home to finish 2nd. The Casino Prince gelding trialled in July and then had a 19-week break and has definitely improved. May be progressive this campaign.

Trial 8 (1000m) 1:00.09
The Lloyd Kennewell-prepared SHUCK absolutely toyed with them here. The lightly-raced four-year-old daughter of Snitzel failed to break through in two starts last campaign but will have no trouble winning this time judging by the trial. She settled in 5th place, saved ground along the rail and charged up to the lead under no pressure at all before being eased right down and going to the line in a canter.  Very, very impressive.
