Gold Coast barrier trial blackbookers May 2 - horses to follow from the Gold Coast trials

  • Smart Missile colt looks ready to race
  • O'Lonhro gelding demolishes his rivals

There were a total of 14 barrier trials at the Gold Coast on Tuesday, May 2, and a few of them contained future potential winners for the black book:

Here are my horses to follow from the Gold Coast trials...

Trial 3 (1000m) 00:59.55
While Sunny Victory won the trial, it was the run of the fourth placed runner that impressed me. Sagaronne ridden by Jeff Lloyd she was slowly away and trapped wide the entire trip. Turning for home she was four and five wide but over the final 200 metres, she was finishing better than any of them. A solid win by Sunny Victory but the result could have been a lot different with a change of luck in running.

Trial 4 (1000m) 00:58.72
Ronnie Stewart was on Manaya in this race and had the three-year-old filly mid-field on the fence, about four lengths off the pace. Halfway down the straight he pulled her out and she was doing her best work over the final 100 metres. She finished second under a fair hold to Better Land who also ran well but Manaya is the one to watch from this trial.

Trial 5 Class 1-3 (1000m) 00:58.45
Jumping from gate one, Glonass railed nicely to take up the front running after the first 100 metres. Eased at the 600m mark, Ronnie Stewart railed well into the straight and without straining a muscle he cruised to a solid victory under a hold, winning by 2.5 lengths. The rest of them were struggling over the final 200 metres. This three-year-old Smart Missile colt won his maiden on debut and looks set to win many more races.

Trial 8 Maiden (1000m) 00:58.69
Caesar’s Secret won’t be a maiden for much longer if his near eight length victory in this race is anything to go by. Ryan Plumb flew the jump from the outside gate and never gave anything else a chance. Not pushed at all, he led by more than 10 lengths at the 600m mark and just kept going. Up to 1200m he shows signs of Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign and is a ‘definite’ for your black book.

Trial 9 Maiden (1000m) 1.01
Ridden by Heather Poland, Bella’s Shadow led the way until giving it up at the 800m mark. Trailing by just half a length, she railed brilliantly and under a good hold, still ran away from the others to win by 2.5 lengths. After eight career starts without finishing top three to date, she looks ready to improve now and it may pay to black book her as well.
