Geelong Barrier Trial Blackbookers January 29 - horses to follow from the Victorian trials

  • 6 to follow
  • Mick Price stable with some future winners
Mighty Boss

A total of 16 barrier trial heats where run and won at Geelong on Monday, January 29, where a few stood out as potential winners and can be followed in their upcoming assignments.

Here are my horses to follow from the Geelong barrier trials:

Trial 1 (1200m) 1:13.38
Caulfield Guineas winner MIGHTY BOSS was in action at Geelong and looks to have come back in good order. He led at a leisurely tempo and was given a good hit-out in the straight where he held a solid margin over Late Charge who was having his third trial this time in.

Trial 3 (1000m) 1:00.02
The Mick Price-trained HIGH RATIO seemed to have a bit on Tony McEvoy’s Quaffany as that pair skipped right away from the rest. High Ratio won on debut and was given an eight-week break before this hit-out – can make the grade when he returns.

Trial 7 (1000m) 1:01.40
GRUNT finished back in 3rd place behind Despatch and Villermont but was never under any pressure and looks to have come on from his first-up win at Werribee over 1400m and his second-up win at Morphettville over 1600m. It’s been five weeks since his last win and this trial would have kept him ticking over nicely. Bigger things to come for this son of O’Reilly.

Trial 8 (1000m)
Loved the trial of DILETTANTE who led comfortably and put five lengths on the 2nd horse when shaken up at the 200m mark. He finished five lengths off the pace in both runs to date, but they were on the synthetic track and maybe grass is his go. Can surely win a maiden off that effort.

Trial 13 (1200m) 1:13.08
HOLY SNOW went a bit quicker than his stablemate, Mighty Boss, in the opening heat and was given a testing hit-out when chasing down Saxophone to score with a big gap to the rest of the field. He went from a maiden win to a placing in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) before finishing five lengths from Mighty Boss in the Caulfield Guineas. Natural improvement will see him be highly competitive this preparation.

Trial 15 (1500m) 1:39.06
BROADWAY DANZA was rock-hard-fit going into this and that may have flattered the trial, but he trialled like a next start winner. His last run was two weeks ago in a 2600m event where he finished seven lengths from the winner in a 0-58 Handicap, but in his trial, he led them up and slowly increased his margin before the rest started to chase and narrowed the gap to 2.5 lengths. But when Jarrod Fry shook the reins at him, he put nine lengths on them in a couple of hundred meters. Either the rest are going very average, or Broadway Danza has turned the corner.
