Cranbourne Barrier Trial Black Bookers November 27 - horses to follow from the Victorian trials

  • Miss Leonidas most impressive
  • 9 horses to put in the blackbook

A big morning of barrier trials saw 25 heats conducted on a Soft 5 track at Cranbourne on Monday, November 27.

A few stood out as potential winners and can be followed in their upcoming assignments.

Here are my horses to follow from the Cranbourne barrier trials:

Trial 1 (800m) 46.89
Tony McEvoy continues to produce quality two-year-olds this season and LOGAN RIVER can measure up. The unraced Snitzel colt showed good early speed and did it easiest to win by two lengths under his own steam.

Trial 2 (800m) 47.19
Another one for McEvoy with the two-year-old Foxwedge colt SANCTIMONIOUS winning this heat. He was caught five wide without cover throughout but still hit the line best under the slightest of pressure. This was his second barrier trial in November and he should be ready to go now.

Trial 5 (800m) 46.63
ONG VARN led all the way to win by 3.5 lengths in good time and was quite soft late. The Nicconi gelding trialled twice in July and August before going for a break and coming back with this trial. Speedy customer who should go close over a short sprint trip.

Trial 7 (800m) 46.32
Terindah won this heat in the quickest time of the 15 800m heats, but it was the 2nd place DIVINE DICE that impressed most. Although Terindah covered ground out wide and won while Divine Dice followed the rail and was no match over the last 100m, the winner pinned his ears back and really attacked the line while the runner-up just cruised within himself. He was run down late by Toy Boy in  a 1200m BM70 when first-up last campaign after trying to lead all the way and should run well first-up this time off that effort.

Trial 10 (800m) 46.72
MISS LEONIDAS was one of the slowest to begin but settled in behind them before going on to score a very soft win. The Shaun Dwyer-trained I Am Invincible filly won first-up last campaign before going for a spell and she looks to have come back in great order. Very impressive!

Trial 15 (800m) 47.18
Aaron Purcell’s lightly-raced Street Cry mare, BARCHETTA, was simply out to stretch her legs and just cruised down the outside to finish in 3rd place. She won on debut over 1200m and then just missed in a 1300m BM64 behind Terindah before going for a spell.

Trial 17 (990m) 58.99
The Mick Price-trained GRUNT finished 3rd on debut at Flemington over 1400m behind Aloisia and Salsamor and that for is strong. He settled well back in this trial and worked home well down the outside to grab 3rd place but was getting closer with every stride and will be better suited over more ground. Bred to get a trip and can be followed this preparation.

Trial 18 (990m) 58.79
Frankie Stockdale might have a nice one here in the unraced Fastnet Rock colt BIG MOON. He settled last in the trial but got to the outside in the straight and rounded them up quite quickly. This was his second barrier trial in November but he seemed to either peak or switch off with 100m to go and may need another hit-out before he goes to the races. However, he should come on from that.

Trial 22 (1190m) 1:14.61
ROYAL REQUEST may be a seven-year-old but he was racing at the peak of his powers last campaign winning three in a row including the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2000m) before going for a break. He was given a good hit-out in this heat and booted 11 lengths clear before being eased up in the final 150m to hold that margin. The time was slow but the damage was done early. May need a couple of runs but can’t be knocked on that effort.
