Canterbury 2YO Barrier Trials - Expert Eye Cast over Them All

  • No mega stand outs
  • But best bred horses stood up
Bondi above beating Outrageous in their trial. They were 2 of the better ones

The first of the NSW barrier trials for 2YOs has ALWAYS been a tremendous spring board to future success.

Despite what doomsayers predict each year, the first of the trials has traditionally, always, produced a plethora of future stars.

And this year will be no exception.

So, at Canterbury Park in Sydney on a perfect Monday morning September 18, the first of the babies strutted their stuff.

Here's the run down on the best of them.

Males

LANDON (I Am Invincible-Prairie Star) don't let this bloke get under your guard. He's very forward, very racy and very speedy. Drew wide but jumped and crossed with ease and won well held together on the bridle.

BONDI (Snitzel-Bondi Babe) this bloke looks smart. Jumped and ran under Hughie and wasn't knocked around at all final stages yet still held them in slashing time. Ready made, relaxed speedster.

OUTRAGEOUS (All Too Hard-Fit And Ready) may not be an early 2YO but I like him a lot. Was restrained to last in fast trial, and really accelerated late when 2nd in slick time. Black Book this bloke.

QUACKERJACK (Not A Single Doubt-Quack It) didn't run super time, but did it rather easily in the end, really accelerating for about 200m when asked. That was enough to rest the lead and win with head on chest. Pay to follow.

HIEMEL (Exceed and Excel-Arctic Drift) jumped well, settled in 2nd, came off the leaders back as they turned and ran him down easily in fast time. Looks a perfect choice for the Breeders Plate on debut. Very professional.

MUNICH (Snitzel-Quench The Thirst) didn't run time, but strangely looked rather relaxed in leading all way and winning quite comfortably. Was there to be run over all way down straight but was simply too strong. Might be one who keeps his power dry.

OSORNO (Exceed and Excel-Antillanca) hugged the fence all way in quick trial and stretched out very impressively final 200m to run down a fast leader. Looks bomb proof and well up to the major early races.

Fillies

QUAINTLY (Exceed and Excel-Status Quo) stood in the gates and missed the kick by 10 lengths. Imagine that, being 6 lengths off 2nd last horse turning for home? Well, hooked out, under urgings yes, she flew home for 3rd.

BOLD ARIAL (I Am Invincible-Helvetica) the aptly named filly looks a racehorse. Didn't run strong overall time, but to be fair, was parked in behind leaders all way and just exploded when released from pocket. Definitely a powerful early 2YO.

SATIN SLIPPER (Pierro-Satin Shoe) won her trial with ears pricked and in smart time. Sat off pace, then went whoosh when balanced up final 200m. Early comer with a stack of talent.

GREYT LOVE (Denman-Greytfilly) was well beaten in 2nd place in very fast time, but looked to have a little up her sleeve down the running. Made good ground on leader while still looking a little green. Will develop into a smart one.
