Cranbourne Barrier Trial Black Bookers May 22 - horses to follow from the Victorian trials

Aaron Hamilton in Trials 23 May 2017
  • Our Gladiator most impressive
  • Deity safely hidden

A total of 10 barrier trials took place on the synthetic surface at Cranbourne on Monday morning where a few horses stood out as potential upcoming winners.

Here are a few to follow from the Cranbourne synthetic trials:

Trial 2 (1000m) 59:50

The Pat Hyland-trained KIRANI settled in 2nd place behind the speedy Gold Fields and simply cruised past that runner in the straight with Stephen Baster aboard. Gold Fields was pushed out to go with Kirani but couldn’t match strides as Kirani went to the line under a strong hold. He has a couple of first-up wins to his name and looks ready to go in a suitable event.

Trial 3 (1000m) 58:93

For some reason, the trial results will tell you OUR GLADIATOR finished 6.5 lengths back in 3rd place, but they are incorrect. Amuthon won the trial with Baster pushing him out to the line, but Our Gladiator was under a strong hold going to the line to finish half a length away in 2nd. He finished 3rd to Ariaz and Motown Lil on debut and then won first-up next prep.

Trial 4 (1000m) 59:94

Another one for Hyland and Baster with GREDINGTON proving far too good for these. He was never off the bit as he cruised home to win by 4.5 lengths. Hasn’t won for nearly two years but was placed at Group 2 level and can pick something up this campaign.

Trial 6 (1000m) 59:33

Again, Hyland and Baster combined with BALLET MASTER leading all the way for a soft six-length trial win without any pressure. He picked up two wins in a lengthy first campaign before failing twice at Group 3 level. Has come back in good order and can find a winnable race or more.

Trial 8 (760m)

An interesting heat with three Godolphin runners. Two strode out and went ok, but it was the beautifully-bred DEITY who led and was put in a vice-like stranglehold as they entered the straight. It was obvious they didn’t want her striding out and she clearly had most to offer. The unraced daughter of Exceed And Excel is out of the four-time Group 1-winning mare Divine Madonna.
