There were a total of 12 barrier trials conducted on a Good 3 track at Benalla on Monday, January 16, and a few stood out as horses to follow.
Here are my horses to follow from the Benalla barrier trials:
Trial 1 (1000m) 1:00:10
Two-year-old colts and geldings were put through their paces here and it was all about education for Robert Smerdon’s BALLE D’OR who finished 2nd. The son of I Am Invincible finished 11 lengths from Invincible Star in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on debut and was then sent for a spell. This trial was about teaching him to come in behind horses and settle which he did to some extent. Will be better for the education and can let down quickly when produced.
Trial 4 (1000m) 58:70
They simply don’t go this good in trials and not win so expect the Robert Smerdon-trained THEANSWERMYFRIEND to be winning soon. The son of High Chaparral decided to break his maiden in a BM78 last campaign and obviously has some ability. On breeding, you would expect him to excel over 2000m, but the dash he shows over short trips suggests otherwise. He ran quick time over the 1000m trip and really put pay to his rivals when asked to quicken in the straight. Very Impressive!
Trial 9 (1000m) 59:50
Patrick Payne’s three-year-old Stryker gelding, YAKIMENKO, can be followed when he gets to the race track. He defeated Benny Goes Berzerk and Destiny's Revenge in a barrier trial back in May, 2016, but hasn’t been seen until now. He smashed his trial rivals by four lengths and can certainly win in maiden grade before being tested beyond.
