The Team Williams-owned and Robert Hickmott-trained Almandin heads a total of nine nominations for Saturday’s Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) and Sandown.

The 2016 Melbourne Cup winner is one of three nominations for the stable with Assign and The Taj Mahal also entered for the $300,000 staying contest.

Almandin failed to make an impact on this year’s Melbourne Cup finishing 11.5 lengths from Rekindling, while Assign comes off a 5th placing in the Coongy Handicap (2000m) and The Taj Mahal finished a gallant 4th in last Saturday’s Emirates Stakes (2000m).

Darren Weir’s Big Duke has a great record over this trip with two wins and two 2nd placings from four attempts, and he ran out of his skin last start finishing 4th in the Melbourne Cup.

The in-form Dodging Bullets is the only last start winner among nominations having claimed a narrow victory in the Kyneton Cup (2000m) on November 8.

Cranbourne Cup (2025m) runner-up Berisha has subsequently been around the mark in the Geelong Cup (2400m) and a BM96 at Flemington over 2800m, while Consommateur, Dandy Gent and Nozomi make up the remainder of nominations.
