Young Hoop is Racing’s quickest Rising Star

  • Stephanie Thornton is quickly rising through the riding ranks
  • She contiunes her great form with a Metro-double at Caulfield
Stephanie Thornton partners Nasdex to another victory.

Stephanie Thornton is just 18-years-old, but the young apprentice is quickly taking Victorian Racing by storm. She continued her form with a Metro-double at Caulfield on Sunday.

The rise through the riding ranks has been a quick one for Thornton. On July 20 she rode her first Metro winner at Sandown aboard Miss It And A Bit. Conidencidly, Miss It And A Bit was Thornton’s first ever ride in a race. That milestone came back on Melbourne Cup Day in 2015.

Just six months later Thornton finds herself in the top 10 of the Victoria Metro Jockey Premiership. She is tied for ninth on 13 wins with fellow apprentice Ben Thompson.

It has taken Thornton just 94 rides to record those 13 wins. That gives her an impressive strike rate of 13.80%. That is the equal third best of the top ten, behind only Stephen Baster and Ethan Brown and tied with Damian Lane.

Not only is Steph Thornton a gun young rider, she is also a Punters best friend. Over 2017 Thornton had 461 rides and finished with 58 winners and 84 placings. Her winners were at an average price of $8.89. This gave Punters a 12 percent Return On Investment throughout the entire year.

She has continued the new year where she left off in 2017, riding a winning-double in only the third Metro meeting of the year at Caulfield.

Thornton started the day in Race 2 aboard the Cindy Alderson-trained O’Lonera. This was Thornton’s first ride aboard the five-year-old Gelding. She controlled the race on-speed before hitting the front at the top of the straight and he was too tough for the fast finishing Angelucci in the concluding stages.

Cindy Alderson and Steph Thornton are quickly forming a great association. Thornton and Alderson have had eight starts together in the last 12 months, for three winners at an average price of $7.10. Giving punters a ROI of 166.3 percent.

Thornton finished her day off in style, taking out the final race, the Jodie Taylor Handicap over 1100m aboard Nasdex. Since being transferred to the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra, Steph Thornton and Nasdex have had terrific success together.

Nasdex has had three starts this preparation for two wins and a third, with Thornton riding the four-year-old Gelding on all three occasions.

Thornton positioned Nasdex outsider the leader and he showed a great kick into the straight and outlasted Murphy’s Reward and the fast finishing Handsome Thief.

"I actually thought he probably should have won last start as well but he didn't have a lot of luck," Thornton said.

"Albeit we sat outside the leader today, he still relaxed well and he finished off well again."

Thornton has one ride on Tuesday at Yarra Valley, she is aboard Thieving Minx for her boss Michael Kent before having three rides on Wednesday at Sandown.
