After a lengthy conversation about many things in racing, I asked him if there was anything in the stable that is absolutely flying – and without blinking an eyelid – he said "MISSROCK."
He explained that the daughter of Fastnet Rock had spelled in Queensland prior to her last campaign, where she could enjoy the sunshine with her mother and sister.
But when she arrived back at the stable, she looked like a “bag of bones” and was facing an uphill battle for her spring campaign.
Following an unsuccessful spring campaign, which still yielded a 3rd placing in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), Missrock spelled in Victoria at Laing’s usual spelling property, and she appears to have come back in great order scoring a first-up win in the Mrs Mac's Family Bakery Sprint (1100m) at Flemington.
She came from the rear of the inside group and launched late, and although she appeared to get tired toward the line, she held on for good win.
Now, Laing had her entered for three races at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday: the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m), Listed Derby Munro Stakes (1200m) and The Galaxy.
The fact he’s taken the hardest option tells me he’s still confident she will be competitive.
She’ll strip much fitter for her first-up run, and she did win the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) when first-up at Randwick last autumn.
This is an extremely open race with a dozen good chances, but I’m happy to take $51 and $12.60 on a horse that drops 7.5kg and has a confident stable behind her.
