The Galaxy Tips and Preview - Roughie looks well over the odds in The Galaxy

  • Open race so why can't a roughie figure in the finish?

Hugh Bowman riding Missrock wins the Percy Sykes Stakes at Royal Randwick

Saturday’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens is a wide open affair and a rank outsider is in it with an extremely good chance.

The $5.50 favourite, Russian Revolution, has drawn barrier 14 in his return to racing, and he may need some divine intervention to score from out there.

Most punters will be playing around Russian Revolution, Music Magnate, Fell Swoop, English, Redzel, Heatherly and Supido, but I’m buoyed with confidence in an outsider after a recent chat with trainer Robbie Laing.

I was at the Adelaide Cup meeting on Monday and borrowed a few minutes of Robbie’s time to discuss Darabad – I should have focused on his other run Double Bluff who ran 2nd.

After a lengthy conversation about many things in racing, I asked him if there was anything in the stable that is absolutely flying – and without blinking an eyelid – he said "MISSROCK."

He explained that the daughter of Fastnet Rock had spelled in Queensland prior to her last campaign, where she could enjoy the sunshine with her mother and sister.

But when she arrived back at the stable, she looked like a “bag of bones” and was facing an uphill battle for her spring campaign.

Following an unsuccessful spring campaign, which still yielded a 3rd placing in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), Missrock spelled in Victoria at Laing’s usual spelling property, and she appears to have come back in great order scoring a first-up win in the Mrs Mac's Family Bakery Sprint (1100m) at Flemington.

She came from the rear of the inside group and launched late, and although she appeared to get tired toward the line, she held on for good win.

Now, Laing had her entered for three races at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday: the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m), Listed Derby Munro Stakes (1200m) and The Galaxy.

The fact he’s taken the hardest option tells me he’s still confident she will be competitive.

She’ll strip much fitter for her first-up run, and she did win the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) when first-up at Randwick last autumn.

This is an extremely open race with a dozen good chances, but I’m happy to take $51 and $12.60 on a horse that drops 7.5kg and has a confident stable behind her.
