Saturday Racing Tips and Preview April 22 - Randwick, Ascot, Caulfield, Doomben and Morphettville

  • Guide to Saturday's best bets and previews
  • In-depth previews of the feature races and selections to back

The rearranged Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) headlines the Saturday racing action at Randwick, while Ascot, Caulfield, Doomben and Morphettville also stage key meetings.

Follow our selections for the weekend below:

Race 2 - SCHWEPPES HANDICAP - 1400m - 01:03pm

FORSEEN has five wins to his name over 1400m and will be better served dropping back to this trip after trying to lead all the way over 1600m. He’s at peak fitness now and should get his own way in front.
Race 5 - YELLOWGLEN HANDICAP - 1600m - 03:03pm

SAKER ran a brave race two starts back when stepping up from 1200m to 1600m second-up. He finished 3rd behind Infathuated and Wayside before losing all desire to win last start when he was tightened for room and dropped out to finish three lengths last in a bunched field. Fourth-up with two 1600m runs under his belt he should be ready to fire in what looks an easier assignment.
Race 8 - D'ORSOGNA ITALIAN RACEDAY - 20 MAY HANDICAP - 1200m - 04:55pm

WOOLIBAR is fit enough to run a strong 1200m now and he has won two and placed two from four at the track and trip. Was caught wide without cover over 1000m last start but still proved too good.

Race 2 - THOMAS NORTH HANDICAP (1600m) 12:50pm

Willing to take on the favourite, Pay Up Bro, seeing he is unplaced in all three runs at Caulfield. Elite Tiger won his past two at his home track but is another that has failed to place at Caulfield in two starts. GRAND DREAMER has only been here once and ran well despite being at the end of his campaign and going for a spell after the run. His first-up effort was good in a strong race, and he can improve enough second-up to be winning this.

With a few of the top hopes drawing out wide, O’MALLEY looks poised to strike first-up. He’s won two and placed one from three fresh runs and his recent barrier trial was encouraging. He was working home strongly behind the speedy Miss Vista over 800m and she franked the trial form with a good win last Saturday.

TYCOON TARA has no luck when she began slowly and got caught very wide without cover in Sydney last start. Second-up last campaign she defeated Le Romain and that form is easily stronger than anything else contesting the race. From barrier 4, Dwayne Dunn can lead or take the box seat, and she looks like one of the best of the day.

Race 3 - 1:17PM $100,000 MANDATE PRINCESS STAKES (1600 METRES)

CANDIKA sat wide and rear-ward in oddly run race here last week, yet charged home for 3rd. Better draw this time and the trip appeals given how she hit the line last week. Big, big show as she was most unlucky last start. In a race full of smart fillies, Siren's Fury is racing well and looks quinella hope.

Race 5 - 2:28PM $100,000 MANDATE ASCOT HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

There is just something very pleasing about the IRISH CONSTABULARY story. Now a rising 9YO, he looks to be in career best form and his best so far has been great. Is resuming here but can get home in this grade in grand fashion. Really looks well in, especially from this inside gate. In His Stride is very honest and will be right in the finish too.

Race 7 - 3:47PM $100,000 MANDATE TAILS STAKES (1600 METRES)

What a terrific field. Sir Moments was great last start flashing home from the back for 2nd in this company. Maryore looked supreme in winning the Provincial Championship Final at Randwick, also coming from a mile back and spacing them in the end. But I like SINGLE GAZE. I think she's back to her best again and that 3rd in Group 3 company at Rosehill last month confirms that. She was handy most of the way and battled on gamely. This is easier if anything and she too will charge from the back.

Race 1 - SCHWEPPES OAKS 6TH MAY HANDICAP (1050m) 12:28pm

Keen to have a crack at the beautifully-bred MINTHA from the Tony McEvoy stable. The daughter of Redoute’s Choice really knuckled down to catch a tearaway leader in her recent trial, and it was that speed and determination that will see her work through the grades. She gets a good weight pull on horses with exposed form, and she just needs a bit of luck from the wide gate.
Race 2 - ATA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS HANDICAP (1100m) 1:03pm

SANDRELLI was good enough to run down Benz in recent barrier trial, and with a good win to her name and a quick freshen-up, she’s the one to beat. She gets in nicely at the weights with just 54.5kg, and Jamie Kah can give her the gun run from barrier 5.
Race 4 - SUZIE REYNOLDS HANDICAP (1200m) 2:13pm

It’s interesting to see Phillip Stokes has dropped MODEL DRAGON back in trip, but who am I to second guess the astute trainer. She scored a good win for us last start, and with a fair bit of early speed on, she’ll be charging home in the straight.

Race 3 - 12:35PM $100,000 ATC HERITAGE CENTRE HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

With the scratching of the potential star Egg Tart, this good little race has been thrown wide open. I’ll be on CAERLESS CHOICE, the bush horse, because I think he's pretty smart. Track will play to suit him and he's 3rd up. He ran to second at the 100m mark in the recent Country Champs Final here and faded last 25m. Fitter now. Can atone.

This NZ-bred, Victorian-trained galloper SURVIVED appeals the most here. He is a solid country cups type of horse with age and experience on his side. He is tough as old boots and is actually in very well at the weights here following the claim. Should be near lead all way and will out grind these. PARAGON is a tough stayer too and will battle away for the minors.

Race 8 - 3:35PM $2 million SCHWEPPES SYDNEY CUP (3200 METRES)

I do think the way the Cup unfolded when abandoned 2 weeks back will mirror what will happen here. With a twist. I think Godolphin's 3rd place getter that day PENGLAI PAVILION will benefit the most from the tough hit out and prevail this time. Winkers go on and he goes well with that gear change. His stablemate Polarization and the toppie Who Shot The Barman, will be right in the finish too.
