Queen Elizabeth Stakes Tips and Preview - Winx bids for 25 in a row

Aaron Hamilton in Latest News 11 Apr 2018
  • Winx can make it 25 in a row.
  • Real battle is for 2nd place.

At Randwick on Saturday, Winx attempts to equal Black Caviar’s 25 consecutive victories when she lines up in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

Despite her odds of $1.18 suggesting Saturday’s contest is a mere formality, the champion mare faces two great rivals in Happy Clapper and Humidor.

Both have tested her in the past, but the champ always finds a way to win and I expect Saturday to be no different.

She is in perfect shape and has plenty of upside following her George Ryder Stakes (1500m) win over Happy Clapper who has franked the form with a dominant win in the Doncaster Mile (1600m).

So, assuming Winx wins, who finishes 2nd, 3rd and 4th?

As well as Happy Clapper and Humidor being obvious contenders, Gail Chop can run a big race as he drops back in trip.

He led and finished six lengths from Winx and Humidor in the Cox Plate, but that was when stepping up to 2040m after previous runs over 1800m and 2000m.

This time in, Gailo Chop had two runs over 2000m and was then tested over 2400m in the Tancred Stakes where he was headed at the 150m and battled on well to finish 1.5 lengths from Almandin.

He should be strong through the line as he drops back 400m in distance and will prove hard to pass.

Richard Freedman’s Japanese-import, Ambitious, is another that should figure in the finish.

He raced a bit keen in the Tancred Stakes and started to pull himself toward the front far too early, and as others started to pass him, he came back to grab 2nd place.

He defeated Kitisan Black in the 2016 Osaka Hai (2000m) and then finished 3rd to that galloper in the 2017 renewal – Japanese form doesn’t come much stronger than that.

Comin’ Through tries to emulate the deed of his half-brother Criterion but faces a massive weight rise as he meets Happy Clapper 5.5kg worse at the weights.

European-raider Success Days would be far better suited on rain-affected ground, but you have to respect the form of any horse travelling half-way around the world for a target race – he goes in for 4th.

Winx should produce the goods again, and over 2000m, I rate Gailo Chop, Humidor and Ambitious above Happy Clapper.

I can’t split that trio for 3rd, so First 4 selections are as follows:

First 4
1st – Winx
2nd - Gailo Chop, Humidor, Ambitious
3rd - Happy Clapper, Gailo Chop, Humidor, Ambitious
4th - Happy Clapper, Gailo Chop, Humidor, Ambitious, Success Days
