Qewy in the rack for tough Godolphin stayer

Qewy fights to win the 2016 Sandown Cup

Australian favourite Qewy has been retired following his sixth behind Vengeur Masque in the Group Three Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington.

Qewy bowed out on a lower note, not familiar to him or Punters that backed him on Australian turf. Qewy had four starts in Australia prior to Saturday, for three wins in the Geelong Cup, Sandown Cup and Bendigo Cup. Possibly his best run of all was his gallant fourth in the Melbourne Cup behind Almandin and Heartbreak City.

The Seven-year-old Street Cry Gelding had 29 starts for six victories and nine placings. Qewy’s wins came at all distance ranges, winning from 1609m up to 3309m.

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby spoke to the media and said he is very proud of the horse.

"We're delighted with what he's been able to achieve," Appleby said.

"He's done a great job and deserves a healthy retirement."

He was qualified (for the Cup) and was always going to be a runner in respect to weights," Appleby said. What he did in the Bendigo Cup was great but it took a bit more out of him than one would have liked if you were going to be competitive in a Melbourne Cup, so that's why we didn't run.”

Qewy sat on the outside of eventual winner Vengeur Masque and was the first horse beaten, not showing his usual fighting qualities. Instead, it was Vengeur Masque who channelled Qewy, fighting off Grey Lion who headed him inside the final 250m and scored an impressive victory to back-up his Geelong Cup win.

Trainer Mike Moroney was very pleased with the horse, even hinting he might be targeted for a different staying race at Flemington over the Carnival next year.
