Magic Millions 2YO Classic Tips and Preview - Will a wide gate dull Sunlight’s chances?

  • Perfect prep for Sunlight
  • Just has to overcome the wide gate to be winning

Despite drawing barrier 15 in Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m), smart filly Sunlight still looks the one to beat.

She’ll come into gate 12 if the emergencies don’t get a run, and with  the speedy Ef Troop drawing widest in the field of 16, he may be forced to do what Houtzen did last year and burn across and try and lead all the way.

That will allow Sunlight to follow him across and settle behind the speed, and provided too many don’t kick up and aim for a forward position, Sunlight may end up with a nice trail.

So that’s the main concern; will she have luck in running?

But I have no queries on her class or preparation for this race.

Trainer Tony McEvoy has meticulously planned his assault on this race and things simply couldn’t have gone any better to this stage.

He sent Sunlight and Crockett to QLD well in advance of their main assignments so they could acclimatise and get used to the high humidity.

A barrier trial and two runs for both of McEvoy’s runners has them well adapted to racing in QLD, and Sunlight winning both of her runs at the Gold Coast by a combined 9.25 lengths, she’s the pick of the duo.

Her last start effort over 1100m where she ran Class record time is what really stamps her as the horse to beat.

She ran 1:02.480 carrying 58kg which is approximately four lengths off the track record (1:01.74) set by Husson Eagle when he carried 54kg.

To do that as a two-year-old filly is simply outstanding, and as long as she hasn’t run her Grand Final and doesn’t take a backward step, it’s hard to see anything beating her.

She now carries 3kg less as she steps up to 1200m, and considering she was soft on the line last start, the extra 100m should be a problem.

Yonker and Ef Troop are the obvious dangers and will be aiming to make it three from three, but Ef Troop might have to use too might energy early while I doubt Yonker has the speed to match it with Sunlight over the final 400m.
