Retired jockey - Katelyn Mallyon

Former Victorian jockey Katelyn Mallyon has announced her retirement from race riding effective immediately.

The 24-year-old who now lives in Sydney with her partner James McDonald has made the decision that there are more things in life to explore and her time in the saddle has come to an end.

She will now put away the silks and start looking towards a career with the media.

"After my recent break from race riding, which allowed me to experience life away from the demands of being a jockey, I've decided that it's time to retire as a jockey and embrace the next stage of my life," Mallyon said in a statement released on Twitter on Saturday.

"I've had an incredible journey in the saddle, for which I feel extremely privileged.

"From a little girl with incredible dreams, to now retiring as a Group 1 winner, it has been an unbelievable journey that I wouldn't change for the world.

"I look forward to continuing on in this wonderful industry through my work in the media."

Mallyon rode 266 winners in her short career including a Group One victory aboard Silent Sedition in last year’s William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

She also achieved another milestone of having ridden in a Melbourne Cup when she finished 16th on Assign in 2016.

She paid tribute to her brother Andrew for his support during her riding career.
