Much improved Jon Snow has Caulfield Cup in his sights

Aaron Hamilton in Latest News 11 Aug 2017
  • Strong team of stayers for Baker and Forsman.
  • Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup the main target.
  • 3YO on Derby trail

Cambridge-based trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman ready to launch their assault on the rich Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with a very talented team of stayers.

And based on Forsman’s assessment of Australian Derby winner Jon Snow, he could be the shining star of their Melbourne-bound quintet.

“Jon Snow has strengthened up a lot, he has gone to another level,” Forsman told NZracing.
“There’s no reason he can’t reach the heights of Mongolian Khan.
“He is likely to resume in the Memsie Stakes. He’s more forward and the fastest of the others and he could run a cheeky fresh-up 1400, although now it’s $1 million there’ll be a few handy ones there.”

As well as Jon Snow, Baker and Forsman have lofty spring ambitions for Australian Oaks winner Bonneval, Crown Oaks 3rd placegetter Eleonora, Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes winner Lizzie L’Amour and promising three-year-old Weather With You.

“Bonneval is doing as well as she can and once she gets to Melbourne she will really improve,” Forsman said.
“Bonneval will most likely kick off in the Dato Tan Chin Nam or the Makybe Diva the following week.”

The stoutly-bred Lizzie L’Amour has also thrilled Forsman with her progress ahead of her upcoming assignments.

“She’s by Zabeel out of a Sadler’s Wells mare so she’s bred to stay and she’s already a Group One winner at weight-for-age over 2000m,” he said.
“There’s a lot of improvement in her and she’s coming up a treat. Once the cups come around she could get a piece of it.
“Eleonora only had a couple of starts in the autumn. She was meant to go to Sydney for the Oaks, but she was injured.
“A Cups campaign will be her go and we might look at fillies and mares’ races early on to ease her into it.”

Still a maiden following three starts to date, Weather With You is likely to be aimed at the Victoria Derby (2500m) following his 2nd placing behind Qiji Phoenix in the Listed Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie.

“He’s a son of Teofilo who we’ve got a lot of time for. Hopefully, he measures up,” Forsman said.

The weather will determine when the team arrive in Melbourne, with Forsman indicating it would be somewhere in late August.

“It’s a bit week to week at the moment with the wet weather,” he said.
“They could fly out on either August 20 or 27.
