Merchant Navy (outside) finished 3rd to Super Cash

Racing was at Caulfield on Saturday February 10 for a nine-race programme that included the Group 1 Orr Stakes (1400m).

Here are three to follow from the day.

Race 5 - 2:50PM Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200 METRES)- Leather'N' Lace

The fillies lined up in the Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) and it was Booker that swept to victory in the Group 2. The eye-catcher out of the run was Leather'N'Lace, who finished runner up after charging home from the back of the field. The Darren Weir-trained galloper, who is normally renowned as being a front runner, was very easy in the betting but looked the winner with 200m to go before her condition gave out. The daughter of Street Cry produced a couple of nice runs last spring and strung together three in a row before finishing 3rd in the Manifold Stakes (1600m). Look for her over the 1400m at her next couple of starts.

Race 6 - 3:25PM Schweppes Rubiton Stakes (1100 METRES)- Merchant Navy

Merchant Navy was just one of a number of the stars from the 2017 spring carnival that was resuming on Saturday and the Aaron Purcell-trained galloper produced a nice return, finishing 3rd to the older horses in the Rubiton Stakes (1100m). The last start Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) winner was sent out a $3.90 favourite and settled at the tail of the field, which wasn't to his advantage given the muddling tempo. The son of Fastnet Rock made up plenty of ground in the closing stages and the performance has seen him installed as a $6.50 favourite for the Newmarket Handicap (1200m), which will be run at Flemington on March 10.

Race 8 - 4:45PM Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes (1400 METRES)- Mighty Boss

Last year's Caulfield Guineas (1600m) winner, Mighty Boss, was among a number of hard luck stories in the Orr Stakes but the consolation for trainer Mick Price is that the flashy chestnut looks to have come back in good order. The three-year-old settled just worse than midfield and begun to work into the race as they rounded the bend. He looked a live chance with 300m to go but could not squeeze past Tosen Stardom and Lord Of The Sky. The traffic jam led to Mighty Boss clipping the heels of Lord Of The Sky, which effectively ended his chances in the race. He was able to regain some composure and finished within a length of the winner, Hartnell, in 7th position. The son of Not A Single Doubt will be aimed towards the Australian Guineas (1600m) in March.
