Hartnell bolts in the 2016 Turnbull Stakes

Godolphin trainer James Cummings has no interest in his stable star Hartnell having another meeting with Winx in the 2017 Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Bursting onto the scene last Spring, Hartnell won the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes and the Group Two Hill Stakes by a combined 14 lengths in Sydney before lining up a $1.90 favourite in the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. Hartnell bolted in beating Caulfield Cup winner Jameka by 3.5 lengths.

Hartnell would then meet Winx in the Cox Plate and the Queen broke his heart around the Moonee Valley Bend, accelerating away for an eight-length victory. Many were questioning the decision to go to the Cox Plate with Hartnell, with the Caulfield Cup seemingly a much weaker race.

Hartnell has now met Winx a total of Seven times, Winx has won all seven encounters, with Hartnell finished a combined 44.5 lengths behind the mighty mare. The closest the Godolphin-trained galloper finished was three lengths behind her in the Group Two Apollo Stakes in February of this year.

In an interview with RSN 827’s Racing Pulse, newly appointed Godolphin trainer James Cummings said “We’re going try and stick to a path that (Winx) isn’t necessarily going to be treading down. If we can steer him towards races where he’s not chasing home a ghost then he’ll be in with a chance.”

That path looks to be the Group Two P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield over 1400m on August 12.

"He'd probably get about 57kg (in the Caulfield Cup) but all things being equal he would be our top seed for the race. We're certainly going to think about it and we can probably decide that after Turnbull Stakes Day and that is when we'll know exactly what we're doing there.” Cummings told RSN 927.
