Dual Cox Plate champion Winx has headlined a total of 141 nominations for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 28.

The Chris Waller-trained daughter of Street Cry will bid to equal Kingston Town’s record of three consecutive (1980, 81, 82) Cox Plate victories.

RV Executive General Manager – Racing, Greg Carpenter, said the wonder of Winx and the depth of her international competition has set the scene for a mouth-watering clash in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.

“As the world’s highest rated racehorse on turf and a two-time Cox Plate champion, Winx is the deserved favourite, and we’re excited to welcome her back to Melbourne for this Spring Racing Carnival as she strives to join Kingston Town in becoming just the second horse to win three Cox Plates,” Carpenter said.
“News of her nomination, however, should come as no real surprise today, which is why it is so exciting to see such a strong contingent of horses declare their hand to try and topple the mare’s tilt for a third consecutive Cox Plate victory.
“We’re privileged to see a champion in Winx return, and delighted to have entries from the key international stables of Aidan O’Brien and Godolphin trainers Charlie Appleby and Saeed bin Suroor, who together have nominated 10 of the 15 internationals.”

The Aidan O’Brien-prepared Highland Reel, who finished third to Winx in the 2015 Cox Plate as a three-year-old, remains a hope of returning to Australia with the globetrotter being one of 15 international entries.

The total international contingent includes seven horses from Ireland, seven from the United Kingdom and one from Japan, with O’Brien’s six entries including Group 1 Epsom Derby runner-up Cliffs Of Moher.
Moonee Valley Racing Club Chief Executive, Michael Browell, said the countdown to the 97th running of the Cox Plate has well and truly begun.

“The 97th edition of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate promises to be one of the richest chapters in the race’s history and today, 80 days out, is the first step towards bringing together a world-class race of challengers as Winx aims to join only Kingston Town as a three time W.S. Cox Plate legend,” Browell said.
“Last year’s race was rated 124.75, the equal-second highest race in the world and best race on turf at the 2016 Longines World’s Best Horse Race Awards and we’re aiming to reach that number one spot in 2017.”
