  • Sire's form always stacks up in the Champagne.
  • Last start winners and runner-ups have great record.
Damien Lane on El Dorado Dreaming wins the Inglis Sires

The colts and geldings outnumber the fillies two to one with six girls among 18 entries for Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Of those fillies, El Dorado Dreaming has been entered by trainer Benjamin Smith following her surprise win in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ where she broke her maiden status in style defeating Golden Slipper runner-up Oohood.

The Inglis Sires’ has produced 11 of the past 12 Champagne Stakes winners, and others to come out of the Sires’ include: All Too Hard colt Outrageous (3rd), Lindsay Park galloper Long Leaf (4th), the James Cummings-trained Encryption (6th), Bondi (7th), Ragged Rascal (8th), Seabrook (9th), Not A Single Cent (10th), Seberate (11th) and Affogato (15th).

Interestingly, 21 of the past 25 champagne Stakes winners have won or finished runner-up at their previous start.

The Jean Dubois-prepared Guerrier won a strong maiden on debut and remains in contention, while the Hawkes Racing’s Irukandji is the only other last start winner among nominations.
