Black Caviar Lightning Stakes on Saturday - Group 1 race narrowed down to just 5 hopes

Flying Artie winning Gr 1 Coolmore Stakes this track last year

The $750,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes will be run on Saturday at Flemington.

It's 1000m down the straight and as we know, barriers play enormous roles in these top level sprints.

In recent times, out widest has been best.

So with 13 running, we must take that into consideration when trying to find the winner this year.

Here are the Top 5 hopes following all that analysis.

In saddle cloth order.

If the track is indeed playing to the outside gates then this old boy comes into consideration. Regarded the best sprinter on the planet two years ago, he hasn't won for some time and in fact has been a big disappointment in many sprints. But he looked good in a recent Sydney trial and don't forget, he was 2nd in this race last year - behind Chautauqua.

Finishes his races like a train and has a good first up record too. Should be on the extreme outside of everything over the final 250m and if he is within striking distance at the clock tower, he can over power many of these. You don't win $1.5m from sprinting if you're only average. Draw might be a big asset this time around.

Is another who will get back and with Hughie Bowman on board, he can sit and pick the lane he wants to charge home along. If it's out wide, he will be back far enough to angle into the clear. He has had a huge boom on him for 18 months now but is yet to win at Gr 1 level. was 2nd at that elite level last start in the Darley Classic here. Respect.

This is the dark horse and the one to beat for mine. If the track is playing to outside gates, he has drawn perfectly in 10. He too has a wicked turn of foot when asked to go and he's won 6 from 9 thus far. Seems, if his trial is any indication, back better than ever and I suspect he is right in the frame at the end of this. Respect.

Is just a professional racehorse with gears, speed and loads of will-to-win. Might be the best sprinter in all the land. We'll know a lot more after this but Damien Oliver should have him just off the pace and when he lets down, he will be rocketing home.

Predictions: 1. FLYING ARTIE, 2. Supido, 3. Spieth
