Trent Orwin previews his best selections for Northam on Thursday night.
R2 – Tims Portrait to place – $2.10
R3 – An Aussie Ingot to place – $1.83
Race 2 (6:45pm local/8:45pm AEST) – MS PACE – 2190m
Tims Portrait and Livingston Bay come up with barriers one and two which looks to give them very strong claims.
From the inside draw and boasting gate speed, I am tipping Tims Portrait who has come up a very appealing price in the early market. He is $7 and $2.10 currently which looks well above his correct price; he looks a very strong chance of at least placing with Chris Lewis driving and I thought he would be around $1.25-$1.40 to place.
He won an R0-R1 event at Gloucester Park on debut and has been placed three times since then. He has hit the line okay at his past two starts from bad barriers and will improve significantly from this draw and in this company.
Livingston Bay looks a better horse at this stage but may not be able to find the lead which means he would be looking for cover. If he can settle 1 out 1 back he may still prove too strong.
Davincis Fiscal gets a lovely trailing draw and has winning prospects also.
Race 5 (8:18pm local/10:18pm AEST) – MS PACE – 2190m
Lagoon Stride could work his way to the lead from barrier three and he would run a very big race from that position. It is not assured with Pelusiac trying to kick up but he has lost some early gate speed with Barry Giudice while Bettorbeastar who is horribly out of form could try and hold the lead if he finds it – some of these Padberg runners are driven tough from time to time.
Three starts ago Lagoon Stride led from this barrier in this grade and was third, beaten 1.9m by Must Be Nice. The lead time was a quick 41.8 seconds and Lagoon Stride was entitled to be run down.
Skippy Rascal is racing very well at the moment and has strong claims in this grade despite the wide draw.
Our Big Slow should have plenty to offer if he gets any luck in running while Rocky Marciano and Northern Emperor have each-way claims too.
Race 7 (9:22pm local/11:22pm AEST) – MS PACE – 2190m
A very difficult race to assess and there appears to be plenty of winning chances. I’ll throw out two runners to back straight-out in this event.
Hilo Angus has plenty of gate speed and may end up receiving a pretty good run despite drawing barrier five. He should look to cross but Dust Me Off is no slouch and may hold him out. Guns With Cows goes forward from barrier six and that could spell cover for Hilo Angus if he doesn’t get across.
A winner three starts ago when leading throughout at $94.80, Hilo Angus has been outclassed at his past two and this is more suitable.
Artistic Lilly drops in grade and despite being known as a frontrunner, she did win over the 2620m at this venue five back and has each-way claims.
Dust Me Off will run a big race from the inside draw and others can run well in an open event.
