Form analyst Trent Orwin provides his best selections for Gloucester Park on Friday night.

Race 2 (5:50pm local/7:50pm AEST) – MS PACE – 2536m

The Gary Hall Snr-trained four-year-old entire Zach Maguire has won four of his past five starts. Times were against him in his only defeat in that time as he ran eighth against a strong line-up.

He will have to deal with barrier seven tonight but driver Gary Hall Jnr has options. He can restrain back towards the tail and look to come three-wide either with or without cover. Alternatively, he can press forward and may gain one-one cover on the back of stablemate Harry Hoo.

Three starts ago he made the three-wide without cover option and defeated Johnny Disco in 1:56.3.

The longer journey is ideal for the son of Bettors Delight who has won five of six starts in races held between 2300m to 2699m.

Race 3 (6:22pm local/8:22pm AEST) – THE LOMBARDO FILLIES AND MARES QUALIFYING HEAT 1 – 2130m

Sheez Edgy returned from a spell in a midweek M0 race which was a lot weaker than what she faces tonight. She fought tenaciously to pick up the victory and has shown she can run well in this grade.

Last prep she was second behind Chevrons Champion followed by a fourth behind that same horse in this grade.

Tonight Michael Grantham is likely to send her to race outside of the leader with no other breeze horse engaged.

I recommend backing her win only as Artistic Lilly can run strong sectionals and Sheez Edgy is likely to miss the place if they run a strong tempo.

Race 5 (7:24pm local/9:24pm AEST) – MS PACE – 1730m

I am probably foolish tipping against Chicago Bull, a horse that has won 18 of 30 career starts, including the Fremantle Cup and WA Pacing Cup.

Erskine Range comes up with barrier one and he will look to lead throughout over the 1730m. Trained by Colin Brown and to be driven by Deni Roberts with Maddison Brown making the switch to thoroughbreds.

Expect Roberts to be having multiple looks over the right shoulder searching for Perth’s little superstar Chicago Bull.

Erskine Range can run strong sectionals in front and Chicago Bull is first up with minimal time to reel the leader in, expect this race to be closer than you think.

Race 6 (7:55pm local/9:55pm AEST) – MS PACE – 2536m

I am happy backing two runners in tonight’s open-class event.

The first is the Bill Horn-trained seven-year-old gelding Heez On Fire who has been scorching late to notch three consecutive victories. Aldo Cortopassi will ease off the gate, let Heez On Fire settle and let him go down the back straight as he tries to reel them in for a fourth successive time.

He has beaten Erskine Range, Ohoka Punter and Run Oneover in recent weeks and he has won three from eight over the longer trip.

Exciteusinthecity captures my attention at rank-outsider odds of $41/$8. He wasn’t too far away last time and with blistering gate speed he could be sent forward trying to cross early. While he didn’t measure up during the Inter Dominion, he looks to be improving and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he caused an upset tonight.

Race 8 (9:05pm local/11:05pm AEST) – MARES MS PACE – 2536m

Four-year-old mare Donegal Rundlescreek is having her first start for Greg and Skye Bond. She had a record of 23 starts, six wins and four minor placings in New Zealand.

Lining up New Zealand form against Western Australian form is never easy, at least not for me, but I’m happy suggesting this mare as she does possess very good gate speed and had beaten home Better B Chevron who is now her stablemate.

From barrier three Ryan Warwick should have her pretty close to the action and her chances would be enhanced if she could lead or find the 1 out 1 back position.
