J J The Jet Plane set for July Cup flight

Nick Wilby - 1 Jul 2009

Jockey Kevin Shea is confident that J J The Jet Plane will bounce back to form when he runs in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on the 10th July.

Last seen finishing a relatively disappointing fourth in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, he was backed into favourite that day and connections were expecting a better showing.  The South African raider finished out of the places in a race that saw Art Connoisseur return to his scintillating two-year-old form.

Now Kevin Shea is looking forward to a week on Friday: "He came out of his run well and it's hard to say what went wrong, if anything did. Whether it was because it was his second run after a lay-off or because it was his first time at Ascot, but I think he ran a little bit below par.  He's in good form and we're happy with him. He'll be running at Newmarket and taking on the ones that won at Ascot."

One horse that won’t be lining up in the 6f race is Marchand D’Or, who will be rested in light of his disappointing start to the season.  Freddie Head said:  “He's not going for it. We've had setbacks with him, he hasn't done anything good this year yet, so we gave him a little break and we'll see. He might run at the back-end."

Bookmakers make J J The Jet Plane a 12/1 chance to return to the form that saw him the hailed the best sprinter in South Africa.
