Ghanaati to swerve Falmouth for Glorious Goodwood

Racingbase Staff - 2 Jul 2009

Emphatic 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes winner, Ghanaati, is set to take on the colts in the BGC Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood next month.

Having been aimed at a possible tilt at next week’s Falmouth Stakes, the filly will now instead head to Goodwood to take on her elders.  It is a sign of the belief that trainer Barry Hills has in his three-year-old following her runaway victory at Royal Ascot, where she broke the track record and was hailed as “the best filly I have ever ridden without doubt,” by son and jockey Richard Hills.

It could be argued that the Falmouth would have been an easier option, but the ambitious decision comes from owner Hamdan Al Maktoum and the filly will be trying to become the first of her sex to win the race since Soviet Song in 2004.

Angus Gold, Sheikh Hamdan's racing manager, said: "Ghanaati has come out her race in the Coronation Stakes well and, at the moment, all being well, will go for the Sussex Stakes.

"Sheikh Hamdan wants to take on the colts and prefers to run her in the Sussex Stakes, rather than in the Falmouth."

Spacious is Betfair’s current favourite for next week’s Falmouth Stakes, currently trading at 3.15, with Goldikova next in the market at 5.5 and Rainbow View at 6.0.
