Cumani confident over Ialysos dropped in class

Luca Cumani is confident that his Greek sprinter, Ialysos, will benefit when he drops down in class and distance in the Coral Charge at Sandown on Saturday.

Disappointing last time out in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the horse will now run over the minimum distance and bid to bounce back.

Joining Luca Cumani after proving too good in his native homeland, Ialysos made a huge impression on his debut in Britain, coming from well off the pace to grab the Achilles Stakes at Haydock.  Now the trainer has decided that he should be dropped in class:  "The reason for that is after a poor effort I don't like running them in another Group 1 race - I'd rather come down a notch and if we can win that we can then go back up in class," he told At The Races.

Luca Cumani continued to explain why his horse had ran so poorly at Royal Ascot:  "On Saturday the ground up the stands' rail was watered and he is used to racing on fast sand in Greece and he was changing his legs all the time. Also in all his races in Greece he has always had plenty of daylight, and that was the first time he was in a bunch.  He doesn't necessarily have to lead as long as he is not in a bunch.”

The sponsors of the Charge, Coral, certainly believe that Ialysos is a threat in the race, they make him 5/1 second favourite behind the 5/2 favourite Triple Aspect.  Anglezarke (6/1) and Look Busy (9/1) are next in the market.
